Difference between Automobile and Automotive

Are you confused between the two-term Automobile & Automotive? We must have somewhere or other heard about automobile-related terms like automobile production, automobile safety, or automobile accidents, but when it comes to automotive, we are blank! Let me clear this term once and all for you.

An automobile is an American term which simply means a passenger vehicle that runs on the road with wheels and its own engine /motor. You see the everyday cars on the streets in which people travel from one place to another! Yes, that's what exactly what we are talking about here! On the other hand, Automotive means any items that are related to motor vehicles. It can be the repairing tools of your car or the automobile industry itself.

Automotive is a term which is quite common in automotive engineering which handles the manufacturing, operations, and designing of different types of automobiles including trucks, cars, bikes, buses, etc. It is said that Automotive as a term was long back used for a machine similar to a self-propelled helicopter. But now, it basically means a motor vehicle with four wheels running on diesel internal-combustion engine or gasoline.

Automotive is not limited to the major car manufacturing companies or the ones producing the equipment’s that supply the parts. It also accounts for all types of Petrol pumps, repair stations, manufacturers, sellers, marketers, etc. Even two-wheelers (motorbikes, scooters, scooty) running on their own engine can be termed as an automobile. In countries like India, there are three wheelers also available for public transportation. They too can be termed under it.

There are two popular engineering branches: automobile engineering and automotive engineering. Both of these engineering terms are same but some consider automobile engineering for the world of cars. It includes designing cars, designing of engines, production of cars, fuel management etc.  It can be labeled as a subcategory under automotive engineering.

In short, an automobile is particularly used for vehicles that run on the road for travelling passengers from one place to another whereas automotive is anything that is concerned with vehicles. The examples have been provided already in the above paragraphs.
